About the speaker

Lourdes Norman-Mckay,ÌýProfessor,ÌýFlorida State College at Jacksonville
Dr. Lourdes Norman-McKay is a peer-voted outstanding faculty at Florida State College, an advocate for diversity in STEM, and a policy advisor for the U.S. State Department Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy.
After her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida, she completed a Ph.D. in biochemistry and a postdoctoral fellowship in microbiology at Penn State College of Medicine. In her 20-plus years as a scientist-educator, she has trained thousands of healthcare professionals and secured extensive funding to empower underrepresented groups in STEM.
As a global extension of her work, she served as a speaker for the U.S. State Department’s International Information Programs to empower women and youth in STEM, bolster STEM education, and build Central Asia’s STEM capacity. As a Jefferson Science Fellow––selected through the U.S. National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine––she co-led the drafting of the policy and technical guidance that informs the global HIV/AIDS response supported through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
