Tips for accessing and using eTextbooks

ÃÛÌÒapp+ is the go-to place to access your eTextbooks and Study Prep, both designed to help you get better grades in college.

eTextbooks have built-in tools that simplify studying, like flashcards, audio options, search, and highlighting. Study Prep includes video lessons, practice problems, study guides, Q&A with experts and more, to help you understand tricky topics and get you prepared for test time — all in one place.

eTextbooks in ÃÛÌÒapp+ give you access to upgraded study tools, including enhanced search, highlights and notes, customizable flashcards, and audio options to simplify studying. Plus, you can learn on-the-go with the ÃÛÌÒapp+ app.

When you choose an eTextbook plan, you can sign up for a 6‑month subscription or pay one time for lifetime access.Ìý

If you select a 6-month subscription, you can make an up-front payment or pay monthly. If you opt for monthly payments, we will charge your payment method each month until your subscription ends. After checkout, you’ll be able to use your eTextbook in ÃÛÌÒapp+.Ìý

If you select lifetime access, you’ll pay one time for your eTextbook access. After checkout, you'll have access to your ÃÛÌÒapp+ eTextbook on the web and through the ÃÛÌÒapp+ native and desktop apps. Web access ends after 5 years, but you can continue to access through the apps as long as you have already downloaded your title.

If you need your eTextbook for a longer time, you can renew your subscription by going to the Manage subscription page in My account. Select Extend subscription to renew your subscription before it ends. Subscription renewal is disabled for eTextbooks that are purchased with lifetime access.

eTextbooks are available for 180 days (6 months). You can make an up-front payment for your subscription or pay monthly. If you opt for monthly payments, we will charge your payment method each month until your subscription ends. You can select Extend subscription on the Manage subscription page in My account at any time to continue your subscription before it ends.

Some eTextbookeTextbook subscriptions are only available for a 6-month minimum term. We’re not able to customize the subscription term.

You can customize your Study Prep subscription, which includes practice problems, study guides, Q&A with experts, video lessons that help you understand tricky topics and more—all in one place.s are not available on ÃÛÌÒapp+. You can go to pearson.com to buy other eTextbooks separately.

ÃÛÌÒapp+ offers something like an eTextbook rental, but it’s billed as a 6-month subscription. A subscription includes instant access to your eTextbook, including study tools like flashcards and audio support. You can also bundle your eTextbook with Study Prep or make a one-time purchase for lifetime access. Your subscription for Study Prep will automatically renew at the end of your term unless you cancel it.

When you check out, you can make an up-front payment for your eTextbook, or you can choose to pay monthly. If you opt for monthly payments, we will charge your payment method each month until your 6-month subscription ends. If something happens and you need your eTextbook for longer than 6 months, select Extend subscription on the Manage subscription page in My account at any time to continue your subscription before it ends.

When you purchase an eTextbook, you’ll access it in your library from the app or on the web. You can also find the eTextbook from a link in My learning on pearson.com.

If you don’t see the eTextbook you need in ÃÛÌÒapp+, you may be able to purchase it separately on ÃÛÌÒapp.com. You can search by title, author, or ISBN.

When you buy an eTextbook plan, you’ll have access to the eTextbook for 6 months.

You can no longer exchange an eTextbook within the first 14 days after your purchase.Ìý

Need to exchange your eTextbook but are near the end of your 6-month subscription term? If you purchased your eTextbook from ÃÛÌÒapp directly, you can exchange it and continue for another 6 months with the new eTextbook. Sign in to ÃÛÌÒapp+, go to My account and then select Exchange eTextbook. If you purchased your eTextbook from a bookstore, you’ll need to buy a new access code from the campus store.

eTextbooks with lifetime access

Lifetime access is a one-time purchase of an eTextbook in ÃÛÌÒapp+ for a set access term of 5 years. During this 5-year access term, you will have full online or web access to your eTextbook, as well as access through our mobile and desktop apps.Ìý

After 5 years, you will no longer have access unless you have downloaded the title prior to the expiration of the 5-year term. If you have downloaded the title, you can continue to access it through our mobile and desktop apps. All licenses are non-transferrable. More details can be found in our subscription agreement.Ìý

With lifetime access, eTextbooks can only be downloaded during the first 5-year period, and they can only be accessed through ÃÛÌÒapp+ apps. Device management rules apply.

eTextbook access codes

An access code is a unique 24-character code used to gain access to an eTextbook purchased at a campus bookstore. When you purchase an eTextbook from your campus store, you’ll be given an access code to redeem on ÃÛÌÒapp’s website.Ìý

Access codes can be redeemed one time and cannot be shared between students. You can have more than one eTextbook subscription. A separate access code is required for each eTextbook and each code must be redeemed separately.Ìý

First, follow the instructions in the email you received from your campus store. Then, visit redeem.pearsonplus.com, enter your 24-character access code, and click Redeem.

As of May 2024, multi-subscription access codes can no longer be redeemed on ÃÛÌÒapp+. Need help? Chat with an agent through the Virtual Assistant. The chat icon can be found in the bottom right corner of your screen. Be sure to select the Transfer Live Agent option from the menu.Ìý

You can have more than one eTextbook subscription. A separate access code is required for each eTextbook. Each code must be redeemed separately on redeem.pearsonplus.com.

Note: Access codes can be redeemed one time and cannot be shared between students.

Your eTextbook subscription gives you access for 6 months (180 days). When your initial term has ended, you can purchase another access code from your campus store. Or you can buy an eTextbook subscription in ÃÛÌÒapp+.

eTextbook features

Many eTextbooks in ÃÛÌÒapp+ offer highlighting and notes as a feature.

Any highlights and notes you add when working offline in the app are synced to the browser view of the eTextbook after the app is back online.

To create a highlight:

  1. From the book content, select (or press and hold) a word and drag, releasing at the end of the passage you want to highlight. In select eTextbooks, you can also highlight an image (includes figures and tables) or video
  2. Select a highlight color
  3. [Optional] Select New note (pencil icon) to add a note associated with the highlight. A marker appears in the right margin where a note has been saved 

To edit a highlight: 

  1. Select anywhere on the highlight
  2. Select a new highlight color
  3. Select Edit note (pencil in square icon) to change your associated note 

To review a list of your book-based notes, select Notebook (notebook icon) from the navigation menu. You can also search for notes using the Search (magnifying glass icon) feature.

Use the Notebook to help you study and prepare for tests. The Notebook for your eTextbook may have some or all the features described in this section.

First, open the Notebook:

  1. Select Notebook (notebook icon) from the navigation menu

Then, add notes without a book highlight:

  1. Select Create to write your note and give it a title (optional)
  2. Optionally, add a hashtag in the note text to categorize your note, such as #skeletalsystem
    1. Categories you create are listed at the bottom of the note
    2. A note can be tagged with multiple hashtags 

You can also review notes in the context of the book:

  1. You can narrow the list of notes that are in view by selecting Filter (filter icon).Ìý
  2. Then, filter by chapter, highlight color, or tags to show only the notes you want.Ìý
  3. To show only your notes that are not associated with a book highlight, select Blank

You can select any note to open it in the eTextbook.

How to edit your notes:

  1. To change the highlight color, update your note text, or add/remove tags, select Edit (pencil in square icon) in the toolbar
  2. Select one or more cards
  3. Select Edit (pencil in square icon) or Delete (trash can icon)

How to export your notes:

  1. To export your notes, select Edit (pencil icon)
  2. Select Export (export icon) and identify where you want to save the PDF

You can select any word in an eTextbook and search for it to find all the locations where it’s referenced.Ìý

Here’s how search works:

  1. From an open page, select (or press and hold) a word and drag, releasing at the end of the word(s) you want to search
  2. Then, select Search selection (magnifying class icon) from the menu

You can bookmark any content in eTextbooks in ÃÛÌÒapp+.

Here’s how bookmarking works:

  1. From a book page, select Bookmark (Add bookmark icon) on the top right 
  2. To see all of your bookmarks, from any book location, select Table of contents (table of contents icon) in the navigation menu and then go to the bookmarks tab. Your bookmarks are listed in chapter order. Select a bookmark to go to its location.

In the Study area of your eTextbook, you can create and edit flashcard decks to help you review and practice what you’ve learned.

Select Study tools (study tools icon) from the eTextbook navigation menu to view your study content and My decks. Choose a deck to open it.

To create a new deck and add flashcards:

  1. Select Create
  2. On the Name your new deck screen, enter the deck name and select Next
  3. On the Create flashcard screen, enter a term or question in the Front field and the definition or answer in the Back field
  4. Select either Save and close or Add another to add more cards to your deck

To edit an existing flashcard deck:

  1. Select Edit (pencil icon) to the right of the deck name
  2. On the Edit your deck screen, enter the deck name and select Save

To edit an individual flashcard within a deck:

  1. Select the deck you’d like to view the deck details page
  2. Select the card you’d like to edit in the card list
  3. Make your edits to the front and back of the card and select Save

To create or edit flashcard decks from eTextbook content:

  1. From an open page, select text for the flashcard
  2. Choose Create a flashcard from the menu that appears when you select the text
  3. On the Create flashcard screen, the selected text will appear in the Back field
  4. Enter a deck name in the Add to deck field and a term or question in the Front field. Select Save
  5. To edit a flashcard from a page, select the same text and choose Edit flashcard from the menu

In an eTextbook, you can study with flashcards in two ways — in view mode or in practice mode.

From a deck, select either View all to see and browse all the cards in that deck or Practice to study a selection of 20 cards and track your progress.

In view mode

  • You can flip through all the cards in the deck 
  • For multiple-choice questions, you'll see the correct answer on the front of the card 
  • For other types of questions, select Flip to see the correct answer on the back 
  • Correctness and progress are not tracked

In practice mode

  • An adaptive learning algorithm selects the 20 cards you should practice next based on your previous answers 
  • Your responses are tracked, and you’ll receive a score when you complete the study session 
  • This score is then reflected in the overall progress bar for the deck

A contextual search feature is available in eTextbooks in ÃÛÌÒapp+.

Select a search result to jump to that content in the eTextbook, whether a glossary definition, content snippet, or other result. In some eTextbooks, you can play a video from the results area.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Select Search (magnifying glass icon) and enter your search term or phrase 
  2. Search results will include content and glossary terms 
  3. In some eTextbooks, results may also include images, videos, math and chemical equations, highlighted text, notes,

Searching phrases: When searching on multiple words like atomic number, exact match results appear first followed by any matches to the individual terms, like atomic and number.

Filtering your search by content type: After you enter a search term in some eTextbooks, you can filter the results to show matches of a particular content type only. You can filter by notes and highlights, chapters, media, figures, glossary, or content.

Searching by location: You can also select any word in the eTextbook and search for it to find all the locations where it’s referenced. From an open page, select (or press and hold) a word and drag, releasing at the end of the word(s) you want to search. Then, select Search selection (magnifying class icon) from the menu.

It’s easy to track down videos and interactives in your eTextbook in ÃÛÌÒapp+. Select a search result to jump to it in your eTextbook.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Select Search (magnifying glass icon) from the navigation menu.Ìý
  2. Then, browse content in the Media key category. You’ll see all the media that are in your eTextbook including videos, interactives and images 
  3. Or, enter terms in the search bar. Some of the terms you can search for include figure (for images), video (for videos) and interactive (for flashcards)

In most eTextbooks, you can adjust color, text size, fonts, and other display settings on the Display settings screen in the app.

  • Color mode – Select Light, Sepia, or Dark
  • Text size – Drag the slider to increase or decrease text size
  • Font options – Select from 5 screen-friendly fonts
  • Character case – Choose upper and lower case or all caps
  • Line spacing – Choose no spacing between lines, moderate spacing or more open spacing

Display settings cannot be adjusted in the app for some eTextbook titles, such as those in PDF.

When you’re reading an eTextbook on your browser, select Display settings from the navigation menu to adjust font size, color contrast or show/hide highlights. The color contrast option is not available for eTextbooks delivered as a PDF

The table of contents is available from wherever you are in an eTextbook.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Select Table of contents (list icon) to see the title Contents, your Bookmarks and your Recent ±ô´Ç³¦²¹³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õÌý
  2. Select any of those to navigate to that location in your eTextbook

Audio support (audiobook functionality) is available in some eTextbooks in ÃÛÌÒapp+.

Here’s how it works:

  1. From an open page in your eTextbook, select Audiobook headphone icon in the navigation menu.
  2. The icon will turn red and the audio menu with play button and audio progress slider bar will become visible 
  3. Select the play button to start or stop the audio 
  4. Drag the slider to advance or replay content 

Note: If you hide the audio menu while the audio is playing, the Audio headphone icon will be replaced by the Audio waves icon in the toolbar.

Using eTextbooks with other ÃÛÌÒapp learning platforms

If you already purchased an eTextbook through MyLab, Mastering or ÃÛÌÒapp’s instructor-led eTextbook platform, you can download the ÃÛÌÒapp+ app and use it to access your eTextbook in ÃÛÌÒapp+ anytime, anywhere.

Be sure you're registered for your MyLab, Mastering, or instructor-led course before accessing the eTextbook in ÃÛÌÒapp+. Then, sign in to ÃÛÌÒapp+ to find your eTextbook in your library.

If your instructor is using the instructor-led eTextbook platform, a course invitation will be shared by email, on your syllabus or through class set-up materials. Use your instructor's link and follow the prompts to access your eTextbook in ÃÛÌÒapp+.

If your course materials are part of Inclusive Access, you’ll access your eTextbook through your school’s Learning Management System (Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, D2L, or similar).

If you'd like to continue to access Revel content at the end of a term, purchase an eTextbook in ÃÛÌÒapp+. Then, use the ÃÛÌÒapp+ app to find eTextbooks for all your courses.

If you need to join a course that includes eTextbook access, use your instructor’s invite link to buy the eTextbook in ÃÛÌÒapp+.

Devices & system requirements

You can use the ÃÛÌÒapp+ app on up to 2 authorized devices at once. For example, if you are using the ÃÛÌÒapp+ app on a phone and tablet, that’s 2 devices.

You can also access your eTextbook using the web browser on your computer. Only 1 web browser can access an eTextbook at a time.

You can access eTextbooks and Study Prep in ÃÛÌÒapp+ with our free mobile app on your smartphone or tablet.

If you prefer to access ÃÛÌÒapp+ on your computer, you can use any browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari).

You can swap 1 of your 2 authorized devices for a new device each month. Once you’ve made a swap, you won’t be able to do it again until the next calendar month.

The ÃÛÌÒapp+ mobile app runs on a wide variety of Apple and Android devices, including:

iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®
iOS 15.0 or later

Android smartphones or tablets
Android 6.0 or later

You can access eTextbooks and Study Prep in ÃÛÌÒapp+ with both Microsoft® Windows and macOS (OS X) operating systems.
